Digger you beat me to it!!!!
Exhaust Style
Hover slightly of wreck.
Hold buoyancy and hold DSMB just above the reg. This is so that when the air you breath out escapes as air through the exhaust of your regulator the bubbles will rise up into the open part of the SMB and slowly under control inflate the DSMB. When DSMB is at a point were it starts to pull my hand up I check all line is free and away from any entanglement and let the DSMB go. I make sure before I do this that the Release is pressed on my reel.
OCT style
Same as above but instead of using the exhaust bubble method use the Octopus. Press the purge button slightly to give short burst of air into the DSMB. When it is as above and pulling slightly let go making sure away from body. People say this method can in cold water cause the oct to freeflow.
Self inflate type.
Slightly undo the wotsit (gone brain dead) and wait till the DSMB filled enough so it will rise to surface. When it is at this stage you can either let go or quickly do the wotsit back up. Some people say that if you leave it open water can get in and damage the bottle. Not seen any evidence of this. I dont use one but have dived about 40 dives in the past with someone who did.
Wreck style
Attach the real to a wreck and fill the DSMB so it is fully inflated, press the release in the safe knowledge it will go to the surface and the reel is safely attached to wreck. Bit of a problem this method if your not diving a wreck or there is nothing to attach it to.
TWO Reel style
Two reel method. Some people have one reel that the DSMB is attached to. Their buddy then attaches his or her reel to your reel. You then release as in either of the first few methods but are safe in the knowledge that should your reel jam or you need to let it go for any reason you can signal your buddy to release his. Your reel simply goes up but is still attached to your buddies.
Not sure if there are any more methods. Best thing is to practice in a pool a few times then some place like Stony were it dont matter if you let if go. Once you have tried several methods and find what is right for you and what works happy days.
There are then the spool methods etc etc............................
Disclaimer
The above is a very loose explanation. I am a basically not an instructor and have no right to advise what to do. If you follow any of this advice and you get hurt please dont sue me as I have no money as it is.
If any of the above methods are total crap please let me know and when Im back at work tomorrow i will edit and delete. Hopefully not many people would have read my stuff and paid any attention.
