Is it possible to have the edit function in certain forums only, so the Planned Trip forum could retain the edit function permanently, but the others would have it removed after a short while?

I've had occasion to go back and edit posts, normally to corrrect any spilling miscakes and to avoid the Wrath Of The Pedants, and have found the edit function useful, although I understand the reason behind removing it. Threads can be hard to follow if whole posts are deleted, but when the posts start to get inflammatory it can take quite a while for people to calm down which means they may need to go back later and edit posts having had time to cool off and that may not happen for a day or two if things really get out of hand.

The other problem I foresee is if someone posts something defamatory on YD and then loses the ability to edit and/or remove the post. I've read elsewhere that the owners of a forum can be held responsible for the posts made on that forum, so, if we can't edit our own posts we are reliant on the moderators/admins to scan each and every post to check for anything defamatory. I don't know if that's done already but I can imagine it'd be quite a lot of work for someone to do.
What would the legal implications be if someone were to write something libellous but then had a change of heart but could no longer edit or remove the post? Would the YD admins then have to take full responsibility for the post, rather than share it with the original poster?

Just a thought

Cheers
Dave
