Russians back Kyoto treaty

Russia's lower house of parliament ratified the Kyoto Protocol on global warming yesterday.

It is the 55th nation to do so, which means the treaty can now come into force.

The State Duma voted 334-73 to approve the treaty giving the industrialised nations eight years to cut their emissions of six key greenhouse gases to 5.2 per cent below 1990 levels.

America has refused so far to ratify the treaty.
