I had the same thing earlier this year. I hadn't been to the dentist in 15yrs and apart from the broken tooth the only treatment I needed was to have an old mercury filling replaced with a white one. Never had any trouble with my teeth but now they hurt like buggery whenever I eat anything cold, they throb after alcohol (not good for someone like me) and had a miserable week in Scapa feeling like someone was hitting me across the head with a 2x4 every time I did an ascent/descent. And it cost me 500quid for the pleasure of getting my mouth knackered.

Not impressed with dentists, they have you over a barrel, there's no way out. My ex was a dentist so I may be biased.
