I think people need to think long and hard before they consider using a HUD as a primary, regardless of whether or not it is fail safe and has it's own power supply.
HUDs IMHO are additional tools that can give you a comfort zone indication, they are not controllers and we should all be regularly checking handsets regardless of hearing the solenoid firing or otherwise. That's what I teach my students and that's what I do myself.
