The Monster Thickburger is best understood as a marketing gimmick. The other fast food chains have begun offering some healthier menu options, so to set itself apart Hardee's is offering something in the other extreme. They certainly don't expect to sell many but it can get them free publicity. And as this discussion proves, it worked.
