If you are looking for something with a voluntary org then buy a copy of the Big Issue from a street vendor when you get here, there are always loads of ads in it. Forget diving work, Manc is about as far as you can get from the sea, most of the shops are small. And it sounds like you're coming from abroad, if you're on a student visa you probably won't be able to work with it, check that first.
