In order to dive a KM helmet do you need to undertake some form of training?
This would be for a "one-off" dive, not a regular thing.
Your advice would be much appreciated.

Best advise I can give is dont be the last one to wear the hat. Not if sucking up someone elses snot is something you feel your missing out on.
An important feature of the kirby morgan band masks KMB-10 Heliox18 or helmets S17 etc is the oral nasal mask inside the helmet, just make sure you clean it out before wearing hat. Also at the same time check the little one way mushroom valve in the oral nasal make sure its seated properly.
All have a "dial a breath" knob on the right hand side on the demand valve second stage. open it up till freeflowing then screw down until flow just stops, you will now be on demand, and will have to adjust this (open out) as you desend and close down as you assend.
I dont like the idea of using the 17 helmet with SCUBA and no unbilical or rope, in fact its a damm stupid stunt. These helmets will use more air than an standard scuba regulator, the scuba cylinder is your bail out, remember if its a modern helmet the locking lock down mechenism on the toilet seat yoke will not let you ditch the set in an emergency.
Before connecting up the umbilical check the non return valve in the inlet connector (suck and blow into it) Always use it with a surface supplied air supply with a proper diving panel and an emergency cross over air supply. Only use your scuba cylinder as bailout. Also use it as it was designed a surface supplied diving apperatus with an unbilical with comms and learn rope signals first.
The hats other two knobs are the free flow defog valve (self explanitary) on the front right and the emergency bail out on the side right, dont mix these up best advise is look at your contents gauge often if water is clear enough, if pressure is falling you are on emergency bail out air and not surface supply.
Finally get to use it with a team who know what they are about, and have a experienced topside support and standby diver, dont prick about with this or the third knob will be yourself. LOL
Final points just remember to suck and blow at the right time and dont get paid. Have a damm good time on it and let us all know how you get on.
