As a general rule I found:

30-35 new trainees begin the DTP
15-20 make it through the pool and theory before losing interest
10-15 manage to get an open water dive (usually Lake district in winter)
and in a good year you'll get 5 or 6 who'll get to the point of beginning SD training.

Scuba has a lot of competition for student time & money resources, beer and clubbing being very, very high on their list of priorities.
