Depends on your budget.

A lot of us around here use the Olympus 5050 (now out of production, 5060, and latterly 7070.

Look in the camera forums for more information on them.

They are great for underwater stuff but also the usual. Bit more bulky than some of the compact digis around but very flexible, good optics etc.

If you get her one that you can put in a housing, you could borrow it as well!
