The Icons Online project will be officially launched today by David Lammy, the Culture Minister.

He will say that his own favourite symbol of England is the red telephone box. But it has not made it into the initial top 12, chosen by a panel of advisers from the arts and academia.

Unlike St George, however, it does feature on a supplementary list suggested by other contributors, which includes Wallace and Gromit, York Minster, apple crumble, and Zippy from the children's TV show Rainbow.

The symbols will focus only on England, rather than Britain as a whole, because of a belief that the country has lost out in terms of identity in recent years to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

There is your answer - and I wonder who would be to blame for that?????
