| Imported post IMHO speed bumps are pretty useless, they don't deter people who are going to break the speed limit, and they annoy people who would have obeyed the limit anyway.
2 of the examples that I can think of are :-
1) residents of a local village complain that people drive to fast and speed bumps are put in. the speed bumps are so high that one is lowered after lorries keep getting stranded on it. The locals went out and bought 4X4's, and when a speed trap was put in the villiage 80% of those caught lived in the village!
2) the road behind my house (nice and straight 30mph limit, 2 speed camera's, nothing in the way of accidents) had speed bumps put in a year ago. the only accident that has happened since then was someone hit a
tree at over 70mph and managed to kill themselves (obviously the speed bumps slowed him down!).
Whilst I feel that speed bumps are pointless, there are other traffic calming measures that work. And I support there use where necessary.
