Despite this, there seems to be a general opinion that the VR3 is by far the optimal compouter for deco diving. Aside from its upgrade capabilities, more gases etc etc. I am not exactly sure why this is.

All deco systems do the bulk at 6m (or 3m)?
Can you show me a profile for a 50m air dive for 40min bottom time using 32% and 80% for deco on the Vytec? I had the old Vytec and it was absolutly nothing like the VR3 profile
VR3 60min deco
1 @ 34
1 @ 25
2 @ 18
5 @ 15
8 @ 12
8 @ 9
5 @ 6
25 @ 3
Deco Planner 20/80 52mins deco
1 @ 39
2 @ 21
4 @ 18
5 @ 15
6 @ 12
7 @ 9
27@ 6
Aside from profiles the adavantages with the VR3 are:
TTS: it tells you what yout total time to surface is using all available gas
You cant bend it in a way to stop it working it will just flag the error and carry on.
It will credit you for deco even if you dont ascend to the recomended ceiling. (this is very important)
It handles Trimix & Heleox
You can reprogram it during the dive if you need to bail onto an unplanned gas
Obviously it also upgradable to CCR but that might not be an issue for you.
It will take back gas and more than three additional deco gases
