Another twinset question

So, I am considering twinning up sometime this year and have been doing a little light reading on some of the archived posts here.

Reading about the differences between manifolded or indies led to a little confusion which I'm sure someone here can clean up in a jiffy ! Basically when you have to shutdown a post - say due to a freeflowing 2nd stage - does that effectively shut off that tank completely or does it shut of the 1st stage but still allows the gas to flow through the manifold. The reason I ask is that there was talk of still being able to get at the gas on the 'problem side' whereas you couldn't if you had to shut down an indie.

OK let the rotten tomato throwing commence !!!!
