You can get software that will (Supposedly) delete data to US Government-approved standards

I think the US gov specifies 7x overwriting with alternative 0 and 1 bit data.

I guess that with each pass of overwriting, you are making it more difficult to recover the original data... however, I don't know how many passes are required before you could be sure that *Nobody* could recover the data.
