I agree in essence but there comes a time when perseverance must give way to reality, and despite all the advice to the contrary many people will never be able to shutdown quickly enough or indeed at all so either they stop diving or adapt their kit.

Not sure if your implying the degradation is inverting, or that it's a poor substitute there mate?
On a personal note the people I dive with and the diving I do is not bothered one iota by my lack of muscle memory or that rapid shutdowns upright are unachievable etc.

You are absolutely right and it was an experienced salt who told me I would never manage conventional shutdowns as long as I had a bum hole.
