Reminds me of the very first open water diving when I trained with the Uni BSAC branch back in January 1990.
I was priveliged (?) to be able to dive in the Albert dock itself, as my buddy was licenced to dive in there to conduct his research experiments.
He had floating rafts dangling ropes that had been seeded with tunicates and mussells to filter the water.
The vis nearer to these was significantly clearer!
I distinctly remember the following:
not much life to see
clearly defined horizontal layers of suspended silt within the water
touching the bottom and seeing my hand easily disappear through the sand-coloured surface straight into a pitch black sludge (bouyancy improved quickly after that one!)

That must be pure quality, I still have memories of Fred dancing around on his map, and last tme I was there about 3 years ago it was still there, but a bit grim looking.
