Ian,

I'm using a D-Cell maglite to house my 50w and have a booted toggle switch on my battery cannister. I intend going HID when I too can source cheap UK supplied bulbs.
There are however a few good circuits for reed switches to be found at hiddivelights discussion group. I have pretty much used this site for reference in the uk http://homepage.ntlworld.com/steve.cooper/ hope this helps.

P.S Where are you having your lighthead made, I would be very interested in seeing some diagrams or pics of that beasty
