I always hated the feeling of air in my feet. I never lost my fins the way you did, but felt too many times like I was about to. So, I got dry socks and Rock Boots - end of problem. I can now fin head down and feet up with no issues.

EDIT: Just as well it was a male buddy. If it had have been a woman and you shouted at her to tow you there would need to be a discussion. But a bloke will just do what he is told when a woman shouts at him
