They are pelagic and will hang back from you, unlike cuttlefish & octopus which are more territorial. They will also appear translucent when swimming around, masters of camouflage, like all the cephalopods and are often very difficult to spot. I've only seen them here in very good visibility conditions and once they've seen me, they are off.

I've seen lots of squid here but more often when looking into the water from above than in the water looking up, so to speak and given the usually poorer vis in British waters, it possibly explains why many people don't see them much.
