1) My choice is refined to the Inspiration classic, KISS or rEVO as they are all godd value for money. Looking at the secondhand market, it is almost entirely Inspirations;
Probably because there are still more Inspirations out there than everything else put together.

What are the important things to look out of when buying secondhand: most adverts are full of incomprehensible TLA's: ADV, BOV, DSV, WOB etc etc and bob howell head/juergensen head's, presumably one needs a manual to understand them all. I.E. what deficiences in a rebreather cost the most to
You want normal. The Vision is the new head and depresses the price of the 'Classic' units. Cracked/leaking classic handsets are a big problem as they cost a bit to fix. Most other things are fixable. Beware of 'improvements' like BOV/DSV/special heads/non-standard harnesses/lungs etc. as they might be done well but not all divers are good engineers.
You are going to learn rebreather diving on this thing and that will mess your head up enough without throwing in more complications. You want one you can dismantle, reassemble and dive straight off the pages of the manual. Hence an ADV (factory option) is about as far as you want to go. Other things in a box ready to refit later might be a bonus...

2) Is it standard practice to deliver a second-hand unit to an instructor rather than the purchaser-novice and will AP valves allow this?
Not these days. People used to be hyper sensitive about these things but I think we've grown out of it now. If I paid my money I'd expect to receive the goods especially second hand where I'd want to go over it very carefully before turning up for a course.
