If you had asked "What is the meaning of life?" you would probably have got a more concise answer Unfortunately the answer is not straight forward.

In its simplest terms it is a style of diving with a recognisable format of kit and procedures that started life on an expedition in the US and has found an applicability in general scuba diving worldwide.

It's emotive because early exponents and accolytes of the system were quite abrasive in their eulogy of the system and others took the implication that if they weren't diving DIR (Doing it Right) that meant they were doing it wrong.

I think that things are moving along and it's more widely recognised that this dogma is a thing of the past and to me, it's about a harmonised set of equipment and procedures which help increase comfort, safety and enjoyment.

The purpose of the Discover DIR day is to allow those who have some interest in the system to come and have a first hand look, try some of the equipment, talk about aspects of the system and perhaps debunk and re-inforce a few myths

I would rather the whole system were not debated here because there are loads of threads in the archives which do that.
