I do know of some kids who get £30 per month, but buy their own clothes.
It seems I was correct in thinking he's trying it on!

£45 a week is completely nuts! To be fair though - once I was in the 6th form I used to get £30 a month 'clothing allowance' out of which I bought pretty much all my own clothes, along with what I earned from my Saturday job and working during school holidays. That was about 8 years ago so if he was buying his own clothes perhaps £45
per month would not be unreasonable.
