if people didn't park where they shouldn't, then there wouldn't be any need for clamper, they are a necessary evil I'm afraid (from one who employs clampers)
did you not see the sign? if there wasn't one, an incorrectly sized one or one not in a place that could be seen easily the you have rights to an appeal
keep the receipt, and take photos of the carpark if you're appealing
