Pretty much as others have said. The yellow SMB is only any good to you if you are diving as a team and the skipper knows what to do if he sees one.

As for the buddy line and the EPIRB - not DIR. Leave them at home!

As for reel placement and the butt d-ring.....The butt d-ring is supposed to be for towing a short body scooter, not something that we do regularly.  However, I find it a handy place for stowing a primary reel, when wreck diving or cave diving.  I tend to clip it to the left d-ring on the boat (to save sitting on it) and move it to the butt d-ring at the bubble check.
