There's no doubt that smoking (and I'm a smoking diver) reduces your lung function. Which affects your fitness etc etc. So that's a fair reason for dir folks to ban smokers. But woudn't a general test of aerobic fitness serve as a better entry requirement? I may smoke, but can run 20 miles or do a 2 hour working dive. Could a fat/old/unfit person? Perhaps it's the specific impact on gas exchange and thus on decompression and gas consumption thats the issue? In which case the fat/old/unfit person may still be at a greater disadvantage than me. Or perhaps it's that smoking is a deliberately inflicted reduction in fitness to dive, and thus implies a poor mental attitude? Ditto the fat/unfit person?
