I just completed my PADI DM course and all through it I dove a long hose with BP/Wing and had no problem. In fact the instructor who took me through the course used me as an example to the OW and AOW students of the different types of gear they'll see and why its important to do a good buddy check and briefing beforehand in order to familiarize yourself with your buddy's gear.
However, I've now switched back to a standard hose for classes and use my long hose only when diving with my regular buddy. I figure that if I needed to share air with a student I'm gonna grab on to that person and control them and take them to the surface. With my regular buddy, we practice DIR S-drills (air share drills) all the time and so the long hose is more useful.
