£300 is not a good amount to spend on a torch IMO, it's a kind of no man's land when it comes to decent umbilical lights.

You can spend much less for something that will do for now and when you lose it, break it, out grow it and sell it then you're not that bothered.

You can spend most of it on a couple of decent backup lights which you can use as temporary primary lights and then you have decent backups for the future.

Or go with the Darkbuster lantern (21W HiD) which Woz was selling for a while but I can't see it on his website anymore. I'm not a fan of lanterns but this was a good one.

Or you can buy the mutts nuts and go with a Salvo HiD but abandon all hope of sticking to your £300 budget. Triple it in fact.

There are more accessible lights (modular) which allow you to buy a battery, buy different heads and then upgrade the battery and so on. This system reminds me of Triggers brush ("I've had this same brush 15 years, it's had a dozen new heads and 7 handles..."). And I've yet to see one in the water that was worth owning.
