Gary, if you use G Man's new hard dive to get the laptop working with a brand new install, then I have a USB hard drive caddy that we could put the drive in, then use it as a USB device plugged into your rebuilt laptop in order to get the data off. The data should be retrievable as long as the hard drive isn't attempted to be used as the main one to boot/start the PC.
If you are struggling with it, and take your drive out and swap it for the other one I can come over and we can try and sort it.
If you are struggling with it, or if the hard drive is an internal one (doesn't come out via a slot) then I could probably strip the laptop and swap the drives etc etc for you one evening. (I am a hardware engineer after all - lol)
What make of laptop is it ?
