Many years ago my boyfriend was convinced that after any journey of significance it was imperative to top up the radiator. So, after passing my test I drove him home in my very first car He immediately got a milk bottle full of water (that's how long ago it was!) and lifted my bonnet

"Are you sure that's the radiator cap I ask ?" I mean, it didn't need a big press down and stand well back scenario. "yeah, yeah, of course " I get in his male, knowing tone

Thank goodness his mate turned up while he was doing it and before I drove anywhere. I was driving an air cooled 2CV
He had just poured a pint of water into my oil sump
