Well the days of accepting the Kings shilling whilst being drunk as a lord have gone so yes joining is voluntary. Having a large portion of your skull and brain tissue removed by a grenade isn't necessarily quite so voluntary, despite accepting the possibility of risk when you sign up.

Because there are those who do volunteer to serve it means that it is unnecessary to force the unwilling to do so. Perhaps you owe some thanks for that.
