frankly yes. It's quite unusual to see it. Side slung either to one side or both sides appears to be far and away the most common setup. I have seen the setup you descrive a few times, but its a few times compared to the hundreds of divers Ive seen side sling their deco bottles. It just gives more options in terms of handing the bottles around if needs be, having your buddy check what gas you are switching to, being able to stow it away on the boat easily, deciding not to take it etc.
