I have done this trip a couple of times in the May / June timeframe. Predominantly the wind came from the north, so at the beginning of the trip [1], which is farther out to sea (Elphinstone, Daedalus), the wind is coming from behind you......and makes for a more pleasant ride. The return journey is into the wind but closer to the coast so not as rough as it might be.

The first time I did the trip, most of the people went "quiet" during the final long passage North and some were properly ill. Last time I did it though, I can't recall anyone being sick.
