| Sorry, but I've turned it off on my HP and mine works fine. The method you used to turn it off is what my work machine uses and Obviously I'm not in the office right now to check it.
My only other thought is that you maybe have stickykeys on, try holding the shift key for over 8 seconds, then when the menu pops up press cancel, if it's more messed up, do it again to put you back where you started. If that doesn't work, try hitting the shift key 5 times quite quickly, then cancel, again if it messes things up repeat it.
