Personally I can count the number of dives that I couldn't have done something better on the fingers of one hand. These dives are called "dry dives" when I just sit there. Many people may say that I am being overcritical of myself but my buddy usually says "I'm not diving with that muppet again".
My 2ps worth on the original(ish) subject - the DIR brigade are confident in their system, other systems generate confidence in their proponents. The idea of having a common set of equipment is reasonable but for a large number of people unachievable due to cost.
There are a large number of posts from the DIR people - that is their choice and to be honest some of the posts are very funny. Some are even
meant to be funny.
My biggest concern about the whole DIR thing is redundency and the buddying system - if I was to go out as part of the DIR trio I would be really concerned at having someone along as the "backup buddy" in case I failed.
