Mum gave ME the roasting for taking them off !!!! Eventually she listened to me and played hell with the school, telling them that if they insist on removing childrens jewellery they should be responsible for keeping it safe.
The school shrugged it's shoulders : 'I'm sorry Mrs Grosart, we have no proof it was anyone from this school !'

That sounds familiar - I had my watch nicked at school from the 'valuables box' (an ice cream tub in the PE teachers office that we had to put valuables in as there were no lockers in the changing rooms - or anywhere else in the school) after a PE lesson. The teacher told me it was my fault for being slow to get it at the end of the lesson thus giving someone else in the class chance to pinch it. In that case it could only have been done by one of the kids in that class with me but no effort was made by the school to even ask who had taken it, let alone treat it as a theft. I was terrified of telling my parents as it was a present from them (and of course the school had told me it was my fault).
In the end my parents weren't angry with me and got no-where with the school. The school and this teacher in particular just didn't care.
Oh and PeeBee - Good on you for having a go at the school, you are right that they clearly have a total lack of respect for the property of their students. Maybe pushing the point of compensation and complaining will mean they take a bit more care of things they are leant in future.
