I'd go with one of the bigger companies. They're normally cheaper and once there, you're met at the airport, transported to the resort etc, but the resort staff, so it doesn't matter which company you're with. Your rep will probably be on another island and might pop in once a week.

In Ari Atoll, it's about Jan to April on the west side at a couple of points. You're not guaranteed though. Whale sharks are a lot more hit and miss. There's one spot in south Ari where they have most luck spotting them. It's near Sun Island.

Apart from the whale shark possibly being more likely in the south, there's not much to choose. There are good site both ends and in the middle.
