| Bear in mind that IATA member airlines (that's just about all of them) have the right to charge you one percent of the first class fare for every kilo in excess of your checked baggage allowance. As a guide the first class fare is usually around ten time the cost of economy - so that's ten percent of your air fare per kilo.
Some make concessions but it can be luck at the check-in and airlines are realising that this is an easy form of exrtras revenue.
If you are travelling to Sharm, the excess could cost £25 per kilo. If you are travelling to the Far East it could be £70 per kilo.
(That makes a SS backplate rather costly.)
On my next long haul trip I plan to leave a lot of my heavier stuff with a gratefiul dive-guide because it will be cheaper to replace it than pay the excess over 20kg for the return leg.
Already I put regulator first-stages and heavier camera lenses in my jacket pockets.
