I presume people do things for many different reasons:
Art, seeing how far people can push their body or it's limits, and some simply for fashion or attention.
It all boils down to opinion and the reason behind 'them' in the end, in my opinion anyway.
Edit: I ought to point out that it's not something to enter into lightly, not that anyone on YD needs telling such things!
