My take on this question - your reg on the right post starts free flowing - you shut the valve and leave the isolator open - that way you still have access to both tanks of gas. With indies, you pretty much just be kissing your right cylinder goodbye. You'd only isolate when you couldn't suss which post had gone wrong (i.e. big bang behind your head) - that way you still reserve access to one tank.
