Question Crotch strap....do I really need it?

Do I need a crutch strap? Is this a silly question or have I missed something? I have never felt the wing riding up. My bcd hasn't got one and its always something else to consider if I were ever to dump my weight belt.
It would however catch my weight belt if it ever fell off!

regards, Andrew

Well it does stop the whole lot riding up on the surface.

It's really the final point to lock everything in place and stop it moving.

Put your weight belt on last if you are worried about it catching under the crotch strap.

If your rig doesn't ride up without a crotch strap it is too tight.
The whole plan of the hogarthian harness is that it surrounds you without being tight anywhere so air can move around your drysuit and blood around your body unimpeded.

Wink

On a BCD you have bouyancy under your arms hence you don't need anything to stop the jacket riding up at the surface!
On a backplate, webbing and wing set up the only way to stop the rig riding up is the crotch strap. If you don't bother with it you would need to have your waist strap and arm straps done up exesivly tight! You may not realize the above unless you have your wing inflated and your suit deflated at the surface in a vertical position.

Oms IQ fitted harness. I have free movement, no problems on the surface, a natural tipped back position.

In short...Yes!

When your wing is inflated at the surface, if it weren't for the crotch strap, you'd be laying flat your face on the surface, face down with your cylinders on top of your head.

gotta say I 've taken the crotch strap and chest strap off my diverite harness and noticed no difference at all (chest strap was just uncomfortable). I don't find myself pushed forwards at all...I suspect its up to preference really. -

ps thats a webbing harness not an IQ BTW and shutdowns were never easier

Never seen the need for a crotch strap. Cut it off the day I got my CD wing.

I also had a CD wing and cut off the crotch strap. This is because the wing is pull tight adjustable when you put it on so its clamped to me and is going no where. There was no riding up of kit on the surface.

If your using a loose rig like a single piece harness you have to have a crotch strap to stop the damed thing riding up on the surface. First time I tried my DIR rig this was realy embarising I use the single tank rig and its undivable without a crotch strap.

I have a crotch strap on my YBOD but only to hold the waste band in place as the counterlungs are attached to it and it rides up alowing the lungs to billow out

I found that not having the crotch strap on made for a realy uncomfortable dive too. It allowed the set to moveup and down during the dive and ended up too far up, tipping me head down.

The strap had come off whilst kitting-up and I threw it aside and jumped in, thinking it wouldn't make a difference. I couldn't work out why i was having such a bad dive for ages, until it clicked on the surface as I hung underneath the wing
