Halcyon 60lb wing.. have i got wrong size

    Hi guys

think i may have bought the wrong size wing. im diving twin 12 eurocylinders. not used yet. and i bought a 60lb wing to go with it. my reasoning was. the halcyon eclipse smaller size struggled to hold me out the water on a red sea day boat. Im negatively boyuant in a wetsuit. and i thought the 60lb variety would give me.. tht bit extra should i need it. im now thinking that im going to have a wing far too big from reading other posts. im 16 stone and sink like one. thanks for any advice

    Hi jonny

the 60lb is a big wing and suffers from air migration within the bladder which can lead to stability and trim problems in the dive ...that being said it is also a good piece of kit.... the 60lbs of lift gives you enough to lift anything you might hang off yourself including a flooded drysuit or a buddy with a flood or loss of boyancy. They will also put you in a positive boyancy position on the surface even if you have a lot of weight ..... so pluses and minuses...swings and roundabouts...

My advice is always to dive with it a little and see how well it works for you ... I dived with a 55lb halcyon for years and found it to be a solid reliable piece of kit..

    Happy diving

thanks hazel. Problem is i have not used it. Im hoping the store will take it back if unused.. although dont really want to as ive been a pain in the ass to them recently.

my thoughts.. if people saying it isnt going to be suitable for diving im wanting to do.. take it back and get 40.

dont really want to use it, as if its wrong i definatly cant take it back

    Can I offer a suggestion?

Why don't you actually go for a dive before you start questioning your kit? You can always sell everything if its not suitable for you or your diving style.

I can loan you a 55lb Halcyon to try out
where do i post it to?

...or Im sure there are others in the South who have a 55 or 60 lb unbungied wing you could try ....ask on YD ..post a request Im sure you will get some positive replies.

people will understand the necessity to try it and keep the bought one for return if required

Jonny, I have an Evolve 60 which you can borrow and see if you like that.

I am based in Fleet if that is of any use although for the next few weeks I am going to be based in Malmesbury, Wiltshire. I note that you are in Lincoln. I am dropping my kids off with the folks on the 29th (who live near Scunthorpe) and can give them the wing if you want to pick it up from Ealand if that helps.

Let me know if this of help. My personal opinion is that an Evolve 60 is too big for ECS 12s and I am sure there will be a picture of NeilH surfacing soon to show you what it looks like!

    Regards

Being negative is not your main issue - it just means you need to wear less lead or use an ali plate to achieve the same level of negativity as others. If you are in an ali plate with no added lead then you can wear thicker undergarments ... they all achieve the wame thing.

The wing is, in my opinion, bigger than you need for double 12s. I tried a 55lb wing to allow a buddy to try my 40 lb wing. There is nothing wrong with the larger wing necessarily but dumping gas did take more effort than a 40lb version. My thinking would be why not just malke life easy for yourself? If the store will swap for a 40lb then I'd take them up on it ..... alternatively ask them if they have a loan wing so you can decide for yourself.

An alternative is to meet up with someone like Rich Walker who will meet you with a range of wings, help you set them up and guide you as to the features of each. Trying in water has to be the way to go, IMO.

    Question 94 lbs!

    Well..

I have just bought a 94 lb oms wing and harness, its bungeed so i dont see air migration being a problem, I will be using it with twin 10s and twin 12s, i dont see what the problem is as with having a Big Wing, Is more not better?

What if any problems are there?

And on the other hand what are the advantages?
