Going to Akumal Mexico in April and although not cave trained have dived Caverns in Bahamas, but was looking for recommendations for cenotes that I would be able to dive and get the most out of ,,and any dive centres /guides.
I intend to do Dos Ojos\ bat cave
Any others??

Cheers Andy

Mexican cenotes

Hi

I was out in Akumal in September for a cave course, I really enjoyed it, thought Mexico and the diving brilliant

in regard to cenotes there are loads,
Taj Mahal, Grand cenote are both good caverns and really scenic. Dos ojos has a good circuit, not just the bat cave. Car wash is good for training !

Just make sure you get a good guide, that will make the difference, or better still do a cavern or a cave intro course while your there!

Ian

Hi Callisto

Would echo everything Ian has said.

Another great dive is a Cenote that I think is called Angelina. There is a mass of decomposing matter at the bottom that has created a gas cloud at 35mish. As you descend it looks like you have hit a sandy bottom but you descend through it to the dark underneath as the cloud filters out the natural light. It's very eerie and quite a unique dive.

I dived with Aktun Dive Centre in Tulum to do this. They were outstanding but that was a couple of years ago so the instructor I had could have moved on. You can find them at:

www.aktundive.com

Enjoy Mexico!

Well if you're not cavern or cave certified you need a guide.

We did a couple of guided cavern dives with Hidden Worlds in Dos Ojos a while ago. The guide was fine etc. but the rest of the group of divers we got landed with were simply not safe diving in the enviroment. You don't want people trying to bolt to the surface when you're 200' back (NACD/APSA cavern zone limit). We did two 45 minue dives.

More recently we did a day of guided cavern diving with Aquatech again in Dos Ojos. The guide was real good and it was just my girlfriend & I. They sorted us out with AL80 twins and we did two 45min dives and one 90 minute dive, which will give you an idea of exactly how large the Dos Ojos cavern zone is.

The prettiest caven zone that I can remember that allow guided cavern dives in is the Grand Cenote.

I would recommend contacting Aqua Exploration and telling Fred what you would like to do. I'm sure he'll be able to sort you out. It'll work out a little more expensive than other options but you'll enjoy all the more.

Yep. I'd echo that.

Fred Devos is a top bloke. Send him my regards if you see him.

If you can get hold of him, Sam Meacham of Makachiik Productions (a video production company in Playa) is a really top guy. He is also one of the lead divers of the Ox Bel Ha Project but he does guiding, $100 a day per group (though it's been a few years now). Sam is a really nice guy.

You might get his details at www.mexicocavediving.com
