Florida Student Found Dead in Underwater Cave

A college student who apparently was snorkeling by himself at a north Florida spring was found dead in an underwater cave.

Matthew Ross Lund, 20, was apparently diving into the spring, and his parents said he may have hit his head on the entrance to the cave.

His body was found Saturday by other divers in an offshoot of Ginnie Springs, Gilchrist County sheriff's officials said.

Lund was on his high school swim team and could descend 60 feet and resurface without taking a breath, said his father, Gary Lund.

"He wanted always to be near the water," said his mother, Barbara White.

Lund was about to start his junior year at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville.

On Thursday, four friends who were exploring a cave in Utah were found dead in a pool inside the cave. Authorities said they appeared to have drowned.
