Johen Hasenmayer? Darkness Beckons.

Hi All,
Just wondered if any one knows what happened to this cave diver par excellance? I know he had a bad spinal bend in 89, and is in a wheelchair. After reading The Darkness Beckons lately I'm interested to read more of this mans extraordinary diving career. Don't know if he ever wrote an autobiography as it mentions in Farrs book. I did have a quick search but didn't find a great deal.

If you haven't read The Darkness beckons its a must read for aspiring divers, cavers, wreckies, techies or just plain nutters. I was amazed at what has been acheived by some very determined individuals, with the use of mixed gases and rebreathers(long before there use by deep wreckers)or just plan old hard work and perseverance.
Thanks
John

John,

If you haven't already, try 'Caverns Measureless to Man' by Sheck Ecxley (sp?)
Nothing about Hassenmeyer - just a good book

Yeah he got badly bent and never properly recovered. Last I heard he was using a mini-submersible for cave diving.

Jochen Hasenmeyer has built a cave diving submarine and recently used it to extend the Blautopf resurgence in Germany. It must be true because I read it in the CDG Newsletter.

His bio (in German) is here: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jochen_Hasenmayer

I'll try Sheck Exleys book thanks. Cave diving submarine sounds a bit cumbersome, must have broke his heart as well as his legs after his major bend. All those years of diving then everythings taken away so suddenly, poor bastard.

Possible for it to occur to any of us though, just gotta try and keep safe.
