Although it got a little diverted into discussion of side mounts, the thread is over two days old and been unable to name an instructor who will teach people in inverts........

But it also hasn't named any that won't......GUE aside. AFAIA Team Chaos are soon on their way to do a cave course in Mexico with their invert CCR's n'est pas?

Safe diving,
Steve

Interestingly when we asked Fred why he crossed over to GUE - he said because the standard of the divers coming into the courses he teaches was consistant and predictable with GUE and they then went away and worked on stuff after the courses and progressed.
I think there is an element of self-selection with a GUE course. I'm guessing you would need to have done fundies at least and have a decent log book in twins? Also, I don't imagine there are many people going to GUE instructors who aren't already committed DIR divers, most of whom tend to be quite anal, sorry, attentive to skill development.

He said that before - he could spend a week just getting some people in to some sort of shape so they could even start a cave course
That's believable. I used to help in a tech training centre with a view to becoming an instructor and decided it wasn't worth the aggro.

When I did my course there was an unwritten agreement that instructors didn't advertise cave training because they didn't want everyone and their dogs doing it. That might sound even more elitist than GUE gets accused of being but it did keep standards up. They were there on the NACD & NSSCDS lists so if you wanted info you asked for it but they didn't go out their way to promote it. You also had to be interviewed by the instructor before they'd accept you -- I spent about 45min on the phone with Shelley Orlowski before she'd even take my deposit.

I know of an ex-navy medic who once told me about a RN expedition to Florida where they were diving on inverts and with a rope to the surface fed to them by a tender. IIRC he said they were getting about 150m of penetration

Ah but a rebreather cave course isn't a real cave course... it's just teaching you to dive in caves suited to rebreathers...

Shame Mark isn't here to take the bait

He's probably about 2km into the back of Sac Actun kicking the crap out of the viz - writing "don't worry - we've got 8 hours worth of gas to sort this shit out" on the wetnotes.

He can take the "bayt" when he gets back

This thread has gone on for so long now - someone somewhere has died a long, slow lingering death trying to dive caves in inverts whilst its been running. Let that be a lesson to you all.

At the final day of reckoning George Irvine will be standing at the Delrin Gates baby oiled up in his extra tight white speedos with wings. The inverted will be found wanting and made to spend an eternity in Heaven with all the nice, slightly dull people.

Its not just a shutdown thats at stake here people - it's your very soul.

If you can touch the back of your neck with your hand - you can get a shutdown with the right gear and a little perseverance FFS.

Even Elvis in '77, at about 20 stone, off his t*ts on drugs, sitting on the toilet, with a cheesburger in his hand, could touch the back of his neck. And that's in a badly fitting leather jumpsuit, let alone a dodgy neoprene drysuit.

Even the King wouldn't have resorted to inverts in his darkest hour.

I'm drunk and I've left the building

Uh-huh *wiggles hip and pouts*

Son, you're going to have to make up your mind about growing up and becoming aircrew. You can't do both.

The aircraft limits are only there in case there is another flight by that particular aircraft. If subsequent flights do not appear likely, there are no limits.

Hey it took the physio six months work before I could do that and she counted it a huge victory. At least I don't need that silly long handled mop in the shower now.

It would take more than 'a little perseverance' to get my finger's a working grip on a set of valves.

I really don't see this moral stance that some people take against inverts. The only real argument that I hear is that you can't do the 'ordained by God' style air share. Right. So do it differently. Only amateurs do it this way.

Why not contact a few and ask them, if you dont ask them, they may not suggest it?

Amen to that

Very probably, but what do you do if you haven't got 18 months of dive time to spend trying to nail your shutdowns, and what happens if you have a freeflow in that time? baring in mind that relying on others is sub-optimal

Safe diving,
Steve
