Until I joined YD I had never heard of GUE but I had heard of DIR. It may have been realised now that it wasn't the best phrase to use and the training agency may now be using GUE as the name but I think most non-technical divers in the UK if they have heard of either will have heard of DIR rather than GUE. Right - back to discussing the merits of English vs American slang terms

I was referring to use of the term stroke not being used, not DIR. As for the rest . George may not have realised what would happen when he "inadvertantly" coined the phrase, but they very quickly realised what a fabulous marketing vehicle it became. Overnight the whole world was talking about these bunch of ******* how dare they etc. The training Agency has always been GUE, the term DIR existed before GUE was born. You raise a good point actually, maybe the section should be retitled GUE ? Would that be any less inflammatory ? .

1. The term *stroke* was coined by Parker Turner, the original project director of the WKPP. Parker, much like Irvine, had a no-nonsense approach to diving and running the WKPP. Parker had his rules as to the team and one either followed them or they weren't on the team. It was as plain and simple as that. But what Parker found over the years that there were so many people trying to get on the team without the willingness to put in the requisite work. Instead they would come up to Parker and tell him how they had done this dive or that dive, blah, blah, blah and Parker said that he was sick of these guys *stroking* him to get on the team. (taken from Re: If a stroke is one with an unsafe attitude, what is DIR?) 2. The term pre-dates Parker (who unfortunately died in 1991) and refers to somebody who is so bad in the water that they would be better off giving up diving and practicing their golf stroke. (taken from The Deco Stop) In the past few years I have only ever heard the term used between DIR divers in a humorous way. It's use as a pejorative for non-DIR types seems to have pretty much died out (cue loads of postings contesting this). Ahmed, having a slow day are you? cheers, Paul |
