You keep your gases at home in the garage and do what you want, when you want, where you want at a much reduced cost.
Apart from the holiday, this is exactly what I did.

3yr old Inspo, ADV, backplate, 2 tubs lime, 2 new cells, various spares was £2,750

The unit has been excellent, very reliable and I'm very pleased. I like the vision electronics, but not enough to pay the extra for them............... just yet.

Stuart makes a good point tho - what is it you want exactly..........

You need to decide what you want out of a unit before coughing up thousands of pounds or you might well spend that much again getting it right.

There are loads of units out there, Classic Insp, Vision Insp, Classic kiss, Sport kiss, Meg, Prism, Optima, OMS (soon to be launched based on existing military model) some of those untis brand new are less than a second hand inspiration.

what is important to you - portability, CE marking, simplicity, large user base, bullet proof build quality?

Give us an indea then you can get a steer!

At least with a new unit i know where i am at, and have a warrenty to boot.

Ahhhhhh this story rings a bell

I paid 3K for my unit and it had 12 hours on it. It was checked over by my instructor and found to be just fine If I paid 3K for a classic it would have to be less than a year old. My one was new July 04 I got it in September 04.

If you find a unit get a CCR diver to come with you to view the purchase. If its anywhere nere me I would be happy to help. A few simple checks will tell you if its OK.

Personaly get the clasic now and go for it. I made that decision before the vision came out. Now its out I am confident and happy I made the right choice. If I were to spend big money on a breather right now it would be a Meg not a Vision/Evo.

The Vision has some good points but I it was a must have for me I would wait a couple of years so they could iron the buggs out.

Fair point, Stuart. I take the view that, given the amount of people who've sold their CCRs -cos when it all came down to it, CCR really didn't work for them - a S/H Inspo's about the best route into CCR. You can always get shot of the thing for reasonably close to what you paid for it if you don't get on with it.

And it also means you've got more in the 'brand new Meg' kitty, for that moment when you've finally been bludgeoned into submission by all the rave reviews and decided to give Leon a call... Used Megs are, for some bizarre reason, rarer than rocking horse sh1t right now

This is my current thinking.* Part of me is tempted to go the s/h inspo route as I can do that now. Part of me says "wait until you finished buying a new house" [7]

So I've decided to wait a few months. This is part because of my circumstances, and part because I'm doing some really good diving at the moment anyway, and if I don't buy a breather for a few months, then I'll just carry on doing that. Oh. The hardship.

Although I guess everyone's circumstances are different.

Janos

PS - Stu, what's the lead time on the Meg? I would ask this on RBW but browsing around it always makes me jealous.

* Current in that it changes day to day

[7] - Buying new house = new mortgage and as we all know - mortgage money isn't real money [c]

[c] - Currently I think a fully laden Meg is around $11000 = £6000.

Good plan. No hurry, there will still be plenty around as and when you're good and ready..

Current Lead time on a Meg has crept up to 3 months form the 2 months it was in February....and yup they are raring than rocking horse shit - I have only seen one for sale at $7500 with APECS leccies and it sold instantly.

Now bear in mind you can get a new one for that almost.....

Thanks for all the replies, what i want is a unit that is good for the dives i do. as my original post said i want a unit for diving mainly in 40-70m region that wont cost me a fortune to run, gas prices are getting stuppid for OC diving and this is why i am looking towards a RB. If i can get a good second hand unit for £2800 that would be great, as i am hopeing to recoup about a grand from all my OC stuff,so at least it's not costing a fortune to change.
As nice as the megs look, £6000 is more than i want to spend or can afford.

It's just when i breifly asked around about second hand units there did not seem much around for less than 3K.

And as Mark said for 3k i would want a nearley new unit, not a 2 yr old one. The only thing i would like the unit to have is back lit hand sets (i wear specs and my eyes are not the best in low light levels) any thing else i could add myself as i go along. If i could get a decent second hand unit with backlit hand sets, 4th cell for VR3 or a HUD and a ADV with history of recent service/new ish cells for under 3K, this is the route i will probably take.If i can save a grand and get a unit with a few extras...happy days. I was not willing to spend 3K on a 2yr old basic unit, when for £800 more i could get a brand new box.

If any one could be kind enough to send me details of what box's are on offer on the closed inspo list that would be great. I live in Wrexham so any box's around the north west for sale would be good, but of course i would travell for the right one.

Cheers
Gareth

Call me stupid, but is this something I should've known about and could do with access to; as I'm experiencing the same dilemma right now?
