Angry Rebreather Scam on E-Bay

I have just received this email from E-Bay Fraud Prevention Department, about a rebreather I placed a bid for, and by the sound of it was lucky not to win.

Dear Charley

The following is a notice from eBay Trust & Safety regarding:

Item Number - 7230215341
Item Title - Buddy Inspiration Rebreather CCR

Our records show that you were a bidder on this item. We recently removed this listing and have suspended the seller's trading privileges. Due to privacy concerns we will not be able to share further details related to this seller.

If someone claiming to be the seller asks you to complete a transaction outside of eBay, we strongly recommend that you ignore the request. Transactions for items listed on eBay that are completed outside of the eBay marketplace are not covered by the Buyer Protection services offered by eBay and can be highly indicative of fraud.

If you have not sent payment to the seller, we urge you to not proceed with the transaction.

If you have already paid, you may wish to pursue recouping your funds. Some steps you might take include:

1. Ask the seller for a refund
2. If you paid by check, ask your bank to stop payment 3. If you paid by credit card, contact your credit card company's security department 4. If you have made a payment by money order or wire transfer, you may contact that company for further information at 1-800-325-6000 (Western Union), or at 1-800-926-9400 (Money Gram) 5. If you paid with PayPal, review the Buyer Complaint Process at:

/csg/p?http://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr...-buyer-outside

6. Review eligibility requirements for eBay's standard purchase protection program at:

http://pages.ebay.com/help/confidenc...uirements.html

There are many tips on how to protect yourself with any Internet transaction in the eBay Security Center located at:

http://pages.ebay.com/securitycenter

Our goal is to ensure that your eBay experience is safe so that you can buy confidently. It is rare that something goes wrong with a transaction on eBay, but we're here to help you protect yourself in the event it does. If you have any questions, please reply directly to this email.

Regards,
Customer Support (Trust and Safety Department) eBay Inc

Lets hope the winning bidder has not lost out

One thing to bear in mind is that Ebay are pretty crap at policing their website and even when complaints are made they don't always follow them up. It is possible that:

- seller has not paid his fees and so account is suspended
- Paypal have frozen his account due to a screw up (see recent Watchdog program)
- another of sellers items has fallen foul of an Ebay listing policy
or
- seller is a no mark, dirty thieving bastard and needs a good kicking

The listing was for an Inspo, not a Boris.

I bid on the same item but did'nt win, a couple of hours later I recieved a "second chance offer" for my original bid. Seller had 50 items all good feed back so I thought what the hell and excepted. Then checked the payment method which was Western Union, never heard of them, cash only which rang the alarm bells. Do you pull out ? (if your wise) the YBOD was in Kings Lynn about 30 miles away so I thought I'd go ahead, sent the money 2350 hard earned. The following day (4 days after the auction ended) I recieved the same mail, which I thought was a bit rich having "won & paid". You'll be surprised to hear nothing has turned up.

The scum bags details: Ron Collins, 4 Seven Sisters Close, KingsLynn, Norfolk, PE30 5RT. The scum bags e-mail:ATA90216@AIM.com

If anybody knows him I'd be interested to hear from you, the e-mail has now gone dead, the account no longer exists. When I contacted Ebay, they simply quote their policy at you, after 10 days I can enter a dispute with the seller. (I'd love a dispute with him, no gloves) I would also caution you on "the ebay Buyer protection Program Amount Insured: GBP2,355.00." if you check you'll find out that this means $200 minus $25 for administration fees. So if you see a sad looking OC git, it'll probably be me.

I would have thought that with the amount of money involved, and the short distance, actually going to see the unit would have made a lot of sense.
