Going CCR - what to do with old OC kit!

Hi guys,

It's been a long time coming, but I've finally decided to get my arse in gear and go CC.

It leaves me with a bunch of old OC kit, and I'm really looking for advice on how best to repurpose it or sell it.

I currently have:

1xFaber tall 12 twinset
2xMK25 first stages, one with S600, one with R395.
1x40cuft stage with MK2/R295 reg.
1xSuunto Vytec DS

I was thinking I might do the following:

Flog the Vytec DS, get a Gecko as a dive timer/depth gauge, and a VR3 to accompany it as the Vytec DS seems overkill as purely a timer/depth gauge.

Flog the twinset.

Keep the 40cuft stage as bailout, keeping the MK2 and R295 reg on it.

Flog one MK25 first stage, and put the 2nd stages onto one first stage, to make up the singles rig.

However, I then ended up wondering:

For MOD1 type diving, would people say the 40cuft is a bit small as bailout? I'm pondering that an 80cuft might be better for that, but then end up wondering if the MK2 first stage is really adequate for use as deep bailout rather than as a deco stage. So, am I best off keeping a MK25 and getting an 80 cuft cyl to make a deep bailout stage, and keep the 40cuft for an O2/50% bottle for shallow deco once I get more experienced or on towards MOD2?

Thoughts welcome!

Regards,

David

How about,

Keep your Vytec as a bottom timer.

Keep your regs as you will need them for bail out & suit inflate bottles

Keep your twin set and fill with o2 or mix to decant from

Keep your ali 40 as its ok for a shallow bail out

Start saving for an ali 80 for deeper bail out.

There you go, saved you a load of hassle.

There isn't a gauge mode on a Gekko so that craps in your handbag.

1xFaber tall 12 twinset becomes dill bank
2xMK25 first stages, one with S600, one with R395. depending on depth you expect to dive to but you'll want 2 stages quite quickly and an argon bottle svees your dil quite significantly
1x40cuft stage with MK2/R295 reg. use a deco gas in the beginging but yes need a larger bottom mix bail out tank
1xSuunto Vytec DS you can run multiple nitrox fills so run accelerated deco on the breather with a bit of planning on this

Hmm!

I think I'd shift the twinset either way as it's a bit hefty for a gas bank really imho! I'd rather get another pair of 3 litre dumpies and swap them on the RB for the weekend rather than lug a twinset around!

What kind of depth do you think a 40cuft would be adequate? I know I'm obviously going to find out more about this on MOD 1 but like to be forearmed!

Certainly does Well, better my handbag smells of poo now than after the Gecko arrived on my doorstep!

keep it all, at some point you'll want it again for one reason or another.

Lightbulb

I flogged my Twinset, wing & BP/harness and regs, to help fund the purchase. I sometimes think this was a bit premature but in actual fact I'm enjoying the CC only lifestyle. I still need some (currently using GF's) single OC kit for pool work to help with instructing, but I'm getting on fine without the old Twinset OC kit as it forces me to dive only with CC, and so get the practice I need.

Well, I sold my old Vytec for £200 - bought a £65 bottom timer to replace it. Then had spare money to spend on ccr gear.
Keep the al40 definitely. I'm certain you will find a use for it - it's fine for Mod1 diving.

it's easy to do the maths!
if your not deco qualified then MOD one only allows a safty stop so
cylinder size * pressure * sac *1.5 (concervatisum!) *10 (meters a minute assent rate) = max depth in ata you can get up from. this is very crude but would get to to the surface and you could probably get some safty stop in

if your deco qualified you should have klearn't it and can work out consumption of various profiles your self
